The enhanced building thermal performance not only reduces heat loss or heat gain, but also improves indoor radiant

environment of perimeter zone and occupants’ thermal comfort. In general, when predicting building energy demand through

simulation, there are limitations that do not reflect the occupants’ behavioral adjustments to maintain their thermal comfort

due to poor radiant environment in actual condition. This study aims to analyze the effect of building thermal performance

on occupants’ thermal comfort and heating and cooling energy demand. Indoor temperature was controlled based on the

indoor dry-bulb temperature (conventional control or simulation method) and operative temperature (considering occupants’

thermal adaptation and proposed simulation method) were analyzed. As results, there was a difference at least 6% to 30%

in the heating and cooling energy demand when considering the thermal comfort of the occupant according to building

thermal performance compared to the case where the differences in occupants’ thermal comfort are not taken into account.

Building thermal performance affects the indoor radiant environment or occupants’ thermal comfort and results in building

heating and cooling energy consumption because of the occupants’ behavioral adaptation for thermal comfort.
